we supercross. do you?

Dust and the girls have a tradition of going to Supercross in Atlanta
each February with the Miller boys and the Gillespie boys.
They love it!
I love it!
(I love my quiet house while they're away.)
It's a win-win.

They arrived early and settled into their seats.
It was a sold out crowd.
72,000 people.
terrifying
I told Dust not to let the girls out of his sight!

they're off

l to r: Brody, Stetson, Ryan Gillespie, Carson, Montana, Kennedy, Tatum, Bryce Hanchett, Ashton, and Anthony Gillespie. They're all such great kids!! (Bryce is a return missionary; Ashton LOVES him!)

i get by with a little help from my friends

I'm not a self-help book kind of girl. I don't feel drawn to the self-help section of the bookstore. In fact, I'm often curious about those I see in the self-help section. I wonder what answers they're seeking and if they'll ever actually find the answers for which they're seeking in a self-help book.
I appreciate the advice of friends and family. I suppose others are my self-help books. I much prefer the opinion of someone I know, respect, and admire. Who's to say the random author of a random book has any advice applicable to my current situation, my life, my values, my goals, my hopes for the future?
I truly believe the answers to any of life's difficulties and questions can be found in the gospel of Jesus Christ, specifically The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am amazed how often I find answers in The Book of Mormon, answers I didn't really realize I was seeking. I know that it is more correct than any other book and that a [wo]man will get closer to God by abiding by its precepts than any other book.

I've been cleaning this morning and have realized something about myself...I like empty spaces. I don't believe I'm a minimalist, per se, but I truly appreciate empty spaces and surfaces.
I do not like clutter on my kitchen counter. My appliances, other than my kitchen aid, are in cupboards.
I love clean bathroom counters. I love clean bathroom floors. (Remember there are five heads of hair in this house plus one ever-shedding chocolate lab. Hair, on every surface, is a constant battle!)
Perhaps the most intolerable thing, to me, about the school year is the endless supply of papers, too many of which take up residence on the side of my refrigerator. I hate having "stuff" on my fridge. The front of the fridge is absolutely off limits. The right side is utilized but the second an item is no longer needed, it is junked.
I do not use the waste bin in the half-bath. If I see something in it, I immediately transfer it to another garbage. empty!
I love empty hampers perhaps more than any other empty space because it means all the laundry is done albeit temporarily.
I love living in a clean home. I'm a happier and nicer wife and mom in a clean house. I appreciate others' efforts to contribute to the overall good (of course this is synonymous with cleanliness) of our home.

I didn't intend to step onto a soap box, but that's funny. I was preaching from a soap box about how much I love a good soap box. ha ha.

this is funny...
His OCD for cleanliness gets the best of him ; )
Peace out...
happy cleaning :)

a sweet escape

Thursday morning the girls and I loaded into the car and headed to Orlando. (Dust was already there for Generac meetings/training.) We arrived at our condo, unpacked, picked up Chick-fil-A for the girls and left them eating their dinner and watching tv. Dust and I boarded a bus with hundreds of other Generac conference-goers, Stacey & Jonny, and made the quick trek to Hollywood Studios. There was dinner, music, and best of all absolutely no lines on Tower of Terror and Rockin' Rollercoaster. I rode each once then sat out with Stace. Dust & Jonny rode again and again. It was a great night!!

Friday morning Dust headed out at the break of dawn for more meetings. The girls and I hopped to it and drove to Magic Kingdom. We had an absolutely amazing day! It was drizzly/rainy off and on throughout the day which kept the crowds to a minimum. We rode ride after ride with minimal lines. We had a great time!

Dust & Jonny finished their training Friday afternoon. Saturday we went to Sea World with the Millers. The girls had such a fun time with their cousins!!

We wrapped up the trip the way all good Rogers would...at the Cheesecake Factory. It was delicious!!

love. valentine. love.

Each day this month I have left a little valentine on the girls' beds and Dust's nightstand.
It's been fun to watch the girls' excitement each afternoon;
they have run straight to their rooms to see what treat awaits.
Dust's enthusiasm hasn't been nearly as noticeable.
I know he's doing cartwheels on the inside though!
ha ha!

I love Valentine's Day.
I love celebrating the love I have for my sweethearts.
I love feeling like a kid again
anticipating the excitement of others.

I hope you have a lovely Valentine's Day
filled with love, loving, hugs, kisses, and of course, chocolate!

uh huh, that's right!

I have a new favorite quote...

"Every guy thinks that every girl's dream is to find the perfect guy.
Bullcrap! Every girl's dream is to eat without getting fat."

LOVE
LOVE
LOVE it!!!

In my 30s I have realized the absolute importance of diet--
not dieting! diet!
I work out religiously.
I have for decades.
As I get a bit older I'm realizing that exercise coupled with crazy eating can result in a skinny body,
albeit a soft, squishy body.
Exercise coupled with healthy eating/moderate to low junk can result in an ooh-la-la body.

I'm trying to tame my sweet tooth
so that one day
I too
can have a bum that looks like this...

always watching

I've always been a people watcher. I'm curious about those around me. I have based many of my decisions on the experiences I've seen others have, both good and bad.
In 4th grade I remember Mr. Asbury, my teacher, getting after a boy in my class for cussing at Field Day. Note to self: don't cuss.
A friend "borrowed" a car in 9th grade, drove it, and promptly crashed it.
Note to self: don't steal cars and drive prior to 16.
For as long as I can remember I have watched my sweet mom as a wife and a mother. I've watched her rub my dad's neck in the car while he drives, tickle his hand as they watch tv, and happily put together a dinner just for him after a late night at work or church.
I have watched her clean, cook, decorate, drive to and from practices, cheer the loudest at games, laugh, support, and love us.
I remember going to the MTC (missionary training center) with Mom and Grandma so they could teach the outgoing Sister missionaries how to appropriately apply makeup, pluck their eyebrows, shave/wax/bleach their mustaches, and behave like ladies. Oh boy did I think they were amazing! If they were asked to teach the Sisters, they must really be great! ...and I must be something special to be there with them...
I watched my grandmothers happily love and care for their children and grandchildren; finding their greatest joy through their families, just like my mom.

I have always known I wanted to be a wife and mother. Always. I used to picture myself as a cute, young mom pushing a stroller or pulling a wagon, knowing that that stroller and that wagon would someday be filled with the world's most beautiful babies.

I watched my grandmothers age gracefully as they continuously loved and treasured their families.
I now "watch" my parents adjust to life without a child or grandchild in their state. Dad wants to know what he did to deserve a life with all the kids thousands of miles away.

Sure there are mundane tasks associated with motherhood as a stay-at-home mom (floors that always seem to be dusty, sinks inevitably filled with bits of toothpaste, hairties galore, flip flops here, there, and everywhere). But I can honestly say I would not change positions with anyone, anywhere. I don't desire a career. I don't desire riches or wealth untold. My greatest treasure is my family.

This morning as I told Kenne "bye" I told her I might not see her again today (she has school till 3:30 and swim practice till 5:30 and I have to be at a Young Women meeting by 5 and most likely won't be home till 9). She said, "Mom, can I just skip swim today?" I said, "No, why?" She said, "Because I want to be with you before I go to bed tonight." What a doll! I'm so thankful that today is the exception not the rule.

As this world shifts and women continuously pursue higher and higher degrees of education and career opportunities before family I wonder how our culture will change. Who is thinking about the children? Who will raise the children? Who will wipe away their tears? Who will sing to them? Who will pray with them? Who will teach them right and wrong?

"Mother, do you love me? Mother, will you care for me? Even if I turn away, or disobey, or go astray, then will you love me still? Mother, will you teach me? Mother, help me choose the right. When I do not understand the Lord's command, please take my hand and lead me safely with his light. I need your love, I need your light to show me how to be like Jesus. The Savior's love will light the path to lead me safely home.

"Oh yes, my child, I love you. My child, I'll always care for you. And with the Savior as our guide, I'll share the light I feel inside, and you will feel his love for you. Oh yes, my child, I'll teach you. My child, I'll help you choose the right. And when you do not understand the Lord's command, I'll take your hand, and he will lead us safely home."

game on

There will never be a man that holds a candle to Dust.
It's impossible!
I gave my whole heart to Dust when I was 18.
It will forever belong to him.

That being said,
I do have a couple itsy, bitsy, teeny, weeny crushes...
one is the winner and MVP of last night's Super Bowl XLVI
Eli Manning.

Truthfully my feelings aren't crushes at all but pure admiration.
I totally appreciate amazing athletes.
A few of my favorites are:
both Manning boys, Eli & Peyton
Michael Phelps
Carl Lewis
you get the idea.

This Rogers' clan was all pulling for the Giants last night.
We were very happy with the W!

Another small reason we pull for the Giants...
silly as it may seem...
just look at their head coach.
Tom Coughlin looks exactly like my dad!
How could we not cheer...
for family?

simply fabulous

Tana went to the temple today.

I have to say, it's amazing that my sweet 13 year old can go to the temple.
How did she grown up so fast?

It's amazing that she loves going to the temple.
She's a beautiful young woman
who knows her divine potential as a daughter of God.

I am thankful for truly fabulous leaders that are willing to sit in a car for eight hours,
on a Saturday,
to take our darling youth to the temple
...and to lunch at Cheesecake Factory...

guitar girl

Tater's comin' along on her guitar.
She came home from her lesson last night with a couple new songs.
She was really excited about them!
Of course, it's Tater so being on camera is never desirable.
She's so cute!!

i'm going there someday

Kennedy and Tatum have an absolutely amazing Activity Days leader (Julie Reeves) at church. We love her! She plans the greatest activities for the girls. They love going; they're always curious about what new treasure they'll discover. This week they made the cutest temple blocks. They were so excited! They were able to pick out the temple they wanted which made it even more special! On the picture it says, "I'm going there someday...". Love!!!

Tater chose the Hawaii temple. It's her favorite! She wants to get married there so badly. She already wonders how everyone will get there since it's so far away.

Kenne chose the Manti, UT temple. She loves the design, especially the round parts (the turretts).

I am so thankful for awesome church leaders that make activities and lessons enjoyable and fun for my girls!

broken humerus...not at all humerous

Tana has had an eventful few days. She was practicing her tumbling routine with a couple friends Friday night, took a spill, and came home with a sore arm. A friend of ours (Joseph Forester, a pediatrician/allergist on base) stopped by Saturday to look at Tana; she was sore and had little range of motion but seemed to be okay. Joseph checked her again Sunday morning at church. There he voiced his concern about her growing discomfort, swelling, and inability to move her arm. He encouraged us to make an appointment with our doctor and have x-rays taken.
Monday morning I checked Tana out of school and went to Dr. Allen's office. He moved, touched and poked Tana's arm and shoulder. Both doctors seemed to agree that breaking her arm at the source of the pain would be incredibly difficult, even approaching impossible. Her discomfort seemed low for a broken bone which led both to believe that a break was highly improbable. Interestingly Tana was completely unable to lift her arm without assistance. She literally could not move it at all.
X-rays were taken. Surprise, surprise...a broken arm indeed! Her upper humerus is completely broken, all the way through (que total queasiness and stomach tossing!). She has a broken humerus, proximal shaft, minimally displaced, not angulated...to be exact.

These pictures of the x-rays are terrible. I literally took pictures of the x-rays on my computer screen because I couldn't get my computer to cooperate with me (yes, it's the computer's fault). Notice "Dora the Explorer" reflected on the computer screen. ha ha! Ashton is home sick today.

Our pediatrician, Dr. Allen, called Orthopaedic Associates and made an appointment with Dr. Thackeray, shoulder specialist. We saw him Tuesday morning. More x-rays were taken. Tana and I were nervous. Because the break is so high on her arm, just under the shoulder, we really didn't know what to expect. It seemed improbable that a cast would be effective in setting the bone. We were praying surgery/pins wouldn't be required. We were incredibly relieved to learn that all she'd require is a sling. Due to her age, the strength of her body and good ol' gravity, together with the sling, her bone will heal appropriately. She absolutely cannot move her arm. Cannot! It has to stay locked in place beside her body.
The sling is Tana's best friend! She sleeps with it on, tightly fastened around her body, so that her arm is not able to move at all. Tana typically sleeps with both arms stretched high above her head.
Once again we are so thankful for doctors and all things medical! Hopefully she'll be well in 4-6 weeks and able to join the track team and have a fully healed and ready-to-run arm.
